Tax Filing Extended

Due to the current circumstances that we find ourselves in the email I received below is a little outdated. I have since received confirmation from Jan Doughty that the tax filing has now been extended for foreign national filings also to July 15th 2020.

Note below from : Jan Doughty CPA.

During this Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, staff in the office will be limited with most working remotely from home. While the office door will be closed, we can be contacted by telphone, e-mail and post . Please do not hesitate to contact us and know that we are working to ensure everyone files timely and refunds are received as quickly as possible!

On March 20, the IRS issued Notice 2020-18 updating several rules on Coronavirus (COVID-19) related tax filing and payment issues since the 2017-17 Notice.

The notice relates mostly to a “US Person” and provides a deferred due date from April 15, 2020 to July 15, 2020 for filing and payment. However, under IRS definitions “US Person” and a “Foreign Person” are different. Our office will continue with current due dates for Form 1040NR, Foreign Individuals and trust, fiscal filers, state returns and Form F-1120, Foreign Companies.

The recent IRS changes may not apply to State tax filings. States are currently processing responses to the recent IRS changes.

THERE ARE MANY UNANSWERED QUESTIONS RELATED TO THESE ISSUES. WE WILL CONTINUE TO LET YOU KNOW RELEVANT UPDATES.

Our firm is here to help so if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

If you have clients planning to sell their property in 2020 please contact us in advance to ensure a FIRPTA Withholding Certificate application can be made before the sale is closed, in order to expedite a refund.

Take care and remain healthy!

Sincerely,

Jan Marie Doughty, CPA
