Originally inhabited by the native Timucuan tribe, the area that now encompasses Windermere witnessed Spanish settlements following the Spanish conquest of Florida in the 1500s. The historical timeline of Florida from the 1500s to 1821 was marked by power struggles among the Spanish, English, and French, culminating in Florida’s acquisition by the United States in 1821 and its subsequent statehood in 1845. The allure of the region attracted settlers, enticed by a US government offer of 160 acres of land to those willing to cultivate five acres and build a dwelling.
In 1885, Dr. Stanley Scott, son of the landowner who acquired 160 acres within present-day Windermere, constructed his residence on the shores of Lake Butler. Being of English descent, Dr. Scott christened his new abode and land as Windermere. The name Windermere itself draws inspiration from its English counterpart, a notable ribbon lake within England’s Lake District National Park. Dr. Scott’s decision to name his dwelling after a place he likely frequented in his youth, coupled with the resemblance of Windermere’s chain of lakes to those in England, underscores the interconnectedness between the two locales.
Scott’s ambition to cultivate citrus mirrored the endeavors of many other settlers in the area until a severe frost decimated the thriving citrus industry, prompting an exodus of settlers. Windermere’s prospects seemed bleak until J.C. Palmer (Cal Palmer) and J.H. Johnson acquired the land, forming the Windermere Improvement Company. Through land sales to new settlers, this initiative gradually shaped the town that would officially incorporate in 1925 as the Town of Windermere.
The enduring link between Windermere, Florida, and its English namesake is vividly portrayed in the town’s crest, which serves as a symbolic homage to its heritage. The crest features elements such as sailboats representing the Windermere Class Racing Yacht, a Tudor window symbolizing the gateways to the lakes in both Windermere and the Lake District, the St. George’s Cross connecting to England, and three native fish species known as Char from Windermere Lake in England.
