A luxurious eco-spa and hotel complex could soon be built in Clermont, according to a report in GrowthSpotter.

The project — Sundara Inn and Spa — will be modeled after an existing facility by the same name at Wilderness Resort, the country’s largest waterpark resort in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. Amenities there include a fitness studio, pools, an exclusive restaurant, a golf course, tranquil spaces and Sundara’s proprietary Purifying Bath Ritual.

At its Tuesday meeting, the Clermont City Council heard a first reading of ordinances that would make way for the eco-spa on 42 acres near Hammock Ridge Road and Lakeshore Drive. The items will go back to the council for final approval.

The proposal for the Clermont location includes a full wellness spa facility, outdoor patios and pools and a hotel with 55 rooms. Plans also include walking trails lined with benches, access to Lake Susan and untouched natural spaces.

Clermont, nicknamed the Choice of Champions, has become an international training hub for elite athletes.

In 2015, Lake County approved the designation of Wellness Way, a 16,000-plus-acre strategic corridor, to “capitalize on the human performance training, nutrition, sports medicine and health sciences work being done at the National Training Center, South Lake Hospital and Lake-Sumter State College, while protecting existing natural resources through effective master planning,” according to Elevate Lake, the county’s economic development arm.

Since then, the area has attracted huge projects, including Olympus, a massive sports and wellness-themed master-planned community currently underway. The 150-acre community will include up to 1,088 housing units, 382,687 square feet of medical office space, up to 1,312 hotel rooms, about 225,000 square feet for retail, 44,5000 square feet of restaurant space and nearly 385,000 square feet of office space.

While the proposed spa project isn’t within the Wellness Way corridor, Sundara is eyeing Clermont because it has become a destination for health, wellness and sports. Plus, the closest comparable wellness spa is in Orlando.

“The owners have long been interested in the Florida market, and the Clermont location presents wonderful attributes; specifically, it’s a beautiful parcel in a growing region with a wellness appeal for both residents and visitors,” Carla Minsky, PR contact for Sundara, told GrowthSpotter.

At the city’s April 2 Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, Joe Eck told the board what a day at Sundara looks like.

“You come in, you check in. You’re in a robe. You spend your day in a robe,” said Eck, chief operating officer at Wilderness Resorts and Water Parks. “You’re going to go to your room, you’re going to go maybe to the pools. It’s adults-only. It’s electronics-free, so we don’t have cell phones… The idea of Sundara is you disconnect. The wellness part of it is what makes Sundara Sundara.”
